1022 Evergreen Place (Cedar Cove) Review

Obviously some of the reviewers of this book are very unhappy people. This book was not bad at all, not unlike all the other books in the series. I kept reading
and waiting for the horribleness that people complained of and it just wasn't there. One reviewer actually had a problem with the fact that a 20- or 30-something
year old actually wore a cardigan sweater with a rose pattern (horrors!!) PLEASE get over yourself. I am not that much older and I wear pretty cardigans all the
time. This is America - there is no fashion police outside of Hollywood.
And Debbie actually has some characters getting married before they have sex. (horrors again!!!)
The fact that Debbie is traditional and doesn't have every character sleeping with every man or woman who comes along is refreshing because our society has so
gotten away from that. Good for her!! If you are into the series, please read the book and don't be swayed by all the negativity.

1022 Evergreen Place (Cedar Cove) Overview

Dear Reader,

Guess what? I'm falling in love! With Mack McAfee.

My baby daughter, Noelle, and I have been living next door to Mack since the spring. I'm still a little wary about our relationship, because I haven't always made good decisions when it comes to men. My baby's father, David Rhodes, is testament to that. I'm so worried he might sue for custody.

In the meantime, the World War II letters I found are a wonderful distraction. Both Mack and I are trying to learn what happened to the soldier who wrote them and the woman he loved.

Come by sometime for a glass of iced tea and I'll show you the letters. Plus I'll tell you the latest about Grace and Olivia, my brother Linc and his wife, Lori (who tied the knot about five minutes after they met!), and all our other mutual friends. Oh, and maybe Mack can join us….

I love Debbie Macomber's books. You feel like the characters become your friends. I look forward to each new one so I can keep up with the characters in her books.

Another Good Macomber Book - Melody Cox - Evansville, IN USA
Another good book by Debbie Macomber. Enjoyed it and would certainly recommend it. Believable characters and story lines. No profanity or explicit sex!

It's always nice to visit Cedar Cove - drebbles - Arlington, MA USA
After a failed and disastrous affair with David Rhodes, which left her with a beautiful daughter, Mary Jo Wyse is in no hurry to fall in love but she finds herself increasingly drawn to Mack McAfee. Mack is head over heels in love with Mary Jo but doing his best to let Mary Jo fall in love with him. In the meantime, the two are trying to find out what happened to the soldier mentioned in World War II letters they found in Mack's house. Other residents of Cedar Cove have their own issues - Christie is still angry at James for leaving her; despite finding her birth parents Gloria Ashton still has relationship problems; Will Jefferson is doing his best to pursue Shirley Bliss but she seems uninterested; Jolene Peyton still doesn't get along with her stepmother Rachel who has some news that will upset Jolene even more. These are just a few of the stories going on in Cedar Cove.

"1022 Evergreen Place" is the 10th book in Debbie Macomber's Cedar Cove series and while I love my visits to Cedar Cove the series becomes more unwieldy with each book as Macomber continues to add characters and plot lines in each book. There are some very nice stories lines, including the Mary Jo/Mack one (and the menacing David pops his head in to cause problems); Shirley Bliss and her daughter Tanith's relationship problems; Gloria's struggles not only with her family, but with Dr. Chad Timmons; Linc and Lori Wyse's problems with her father. Other storylines are good but are quite developed enough, namely, the ongoing saga of the Christie/James romance and the problems Rachel and Bruce are having (since the next book focuses on them this should've been developed more). The writing is a mixed bag - most of it is good, but Macomber relies a bit too much on flashbacks. The wedding of Troy Davis and Faith Beckwith seems thrown in there at the last minute and was rushed. Will Jefferson is a cardboard character. I liked the mystery of the World War II letters (and the resolution of that plot line) but at times Macomber seems to be quoting directly from reference books. Macomber also recycles plot lines - a lot - I groaned when I saw where she was going to Chad/Gloria story.

All in all, "1022 Evergreen Place" has its flaws, but I still enjoyed my visit to Cedar Cove and look forward to visiting again next year.

Passion Unleashed (Demonica, Book 3) Review

Wraith has had a hard life since conception. His mother was in the middle of her turning into a vampire when Wraiths father found her and raped her. He then kept her in a in between status while, continuing to rape her till she delivered Wraith then he took off leavening the newborn pure Seminus demon in the hands of vampires. Once he was old enough to no longer need a wet nurse he was put in a cage and tortured. Once his transition hit him he was given prostitutes to rape and feed from, when he refused he was beaten more. He got away from them only to be caught again and beaten to near death. The only thing that saved him is E and Shade had felt his agony through their bond, then came for him, and saved him.
Wraith lived a self destructive life, with no concern for any one not even the brothers who loved him so. I love Wraith I could see the love in him even if he put on the front that he didn't care about anyone or anything, like the way he took a liking to Kenyon, even though he liked to pretend he didn't like that human. He also cares a lot for the hospital that his brothers had worked so hard to build and run. He even enjoys his work he does for the hospital even though he knows it is only to keep him out of trouble.
After finding out he had been injected with a poison that there is no cure, Wraith was willing to except that fate, but E told him his life force is tied to the hospital and if he died the hospital will go down with him and he could not do that to his brothers. The only way to survive is to find the charmed human Serena and take her charm by taking her virginity. This was against everything Wraith felt, not only does he not sleep with humans but to take a virgin, he would have to pay pence to the Seminus council for that one. But upon meeting Serena, under the illusion he was a man she was to meet named Josh, all bets were off.
Serena had never met a man like Josh/Wraith. He brought about feelings she was not suppose to feel for any one must less a man. She knew that he would be dangerous to her but she couldn't stay away from him, and she had to admit with all the demons chasing her she needed him to protect her. But if she gave in and gave up her virginity and she charm she would die. Serena is shy and cute, I liked her she stood her ground with Wraith and she even tried to protect him at times, which made me like her even more
The world at stake, if anyone got a hold of Serena and her amulet, and Wraiths life on the line, not to mention the fact Wraith was falling in love with Serena. Will he be able to take her charm and end her life? Even if it means that he will save his brothers and the world?
I loved this book it is my favorite in this series. I love Wraith he has a tender heart no one seen coming. I love the story line of Gem and Kenyon in this book. The introduction of Lore was great to I did not see that coming at all. I think as usual Larissa made a great book.

Demon/Vamp Male and an Immortal-Human Female -
Wraith is half vampire and half seminus-demon that knows torture intimately, from his vamp mother no less! Because of this he has a not so nice view on love, females and family in general; he works with his brothers at the hospital by doing what he does best and that's bringing in rare items requested by his older brother, but tries to have as little interaction with them as possible. He is in no way looking for anything permanent with a female.
Serena is a treasure hunter that runs into some trouble by the name of Wraith when she becomes the treasure! These two make archeology hot and keep the pages turning with their passion and adventures; least of all the fact that they are racing to save the world in good vs. evil type situation that enlists the aid of demons, vamps, weres, enchanted humans and of course fallen angels.

4 stars due to cheesey ending - bearboo2 - CA, United States
This was my first demon series as I decided to read something other than another vampire series. Based on other reviews, I chose the first 3 books in this series. All 3 books were a fun and easy read, and this one was about my favorite character,Wraith, the 1/2 vampire 1/2 demon. But when his story/plot ended up being so ridiculous it was almost cheesey and corny, I was rather disappointed and thus, the 4 stars.

Pretty Good - jperez -
Pretty good but not my favorite in the series so far. Can't wait till I get the next book.

Unfortunately...a True Disappointment - A Lot of Reading -
If you're reading reviews for this book because you enjoyed The Madness of Lord Ian Mackenzie, take my advice and skip this entry in the series. It is, much to my disappointment, absolutely tedious. With the preceding book having been so thoroughly enjoyable, I had been hoping beyond hope (in the face of the reviews that I had read before purchasing it) that this would at least come close. No such luck. It's hard to believe that the quality of the two books could be so inconsistent but there it is. Bummer.

Disappointing entry in the Highland Pleasures series - Sacramento Book Review - Sacramento, CA
//Lady Isabella's Scandalous Marriage// is the second book in Jennifer Ashley's series about the wicked Mackenzies who scandalize Victorian Britain. While it shares the strengths of //The Madness of Lord Ian Mackenzie//, it fails to match the suspense, passion, and extraordinary characters of the other book.

Isabella and Mac's broken marriage is the topic of this book. They eloped on the night of her debut, but Mac's inability to communicate with Isabella, and his alcoholism have torn them apart. Over the years, Mac and Isabella have remained friendly, but she cannot forgive his treatment of her and he makes no amends. For some reason, however, when Isabella storms back into Mac's life to inform him that someone is forging his paintings, he decides to win her back.

Though their relationship is heartrending and emotional, their reunion lacks punch; mostly because Ashley dribbles their history in short flashbacks later on in the book and Mac's recovery from alcoholism seems too easy. There is also plenty of passion between Mac and Isabella, but she keeps him at arm's length for far too long.

The weakest part of the book is the forgery plot. It is woven into the narrative when there is a lull, and is wrapped up in a clichéd manner. Fortunately, the inclusion of the colorful Mackenzie family livens the book and makes reading //Lady Isabella's Scandalous Marriage// less of a chore.

I look forward to the next in the series - Karen - Cheyenne, WY
I agree with so many of the reviews. I loved the first book in this series and I look forward to the third book, but I just didn't care about these characters. I love Jennifer Ashley's writing, that is what keeps me coming back. The plot just didn't hold my attention. Now if the story had been about the night these two met and eloped and then went into the sufferings and tragedy that occurred and then to have them overcome those and declare their everlasting love, well that would have been more interesting to me. The parts of the story that describe the night they met were intriguing to say the least. An enjoyable read, just didn't make me want more. Now Cam's story sounds good, I just hope it has more of the angst, depth and characteristics of the first in this series.

The Dream-Hunter (A Dream-Hunter Novel, Book 1) Review

Arikos is a dream-hunter a race of gods who were cursed by the Zeus to longer feel any type of emotions. After centuries of searching he finally found a woman whose dreams are so vivid he could feel her emotions as his own. He comes to her in her dreams over and over till it becomes an obsession. After being told that he has spent too much type on one human and that he must leave her and move on. He finds he can't and the strangest part for him is the fact he wants more than just what he can have in his Dreams. He wants to be part of her life feel her as a human man would. So In order to become human he must make a deal with a god and no god in Olympus would dare help him so the only one who he could ask to help is Hades. As with any deal with a god there is a steep price to be paid , And the price Hades is asking is the soul of the one person In This world he covets more than anything else.

Dr. Megeara kafieri has watch most of her family searched for Atlantis and many died for the search. Her father died a laughing stock the world never believed his findings. On his death bed Mageara promised she would not let his research go to waste and would continue on he's quest to find the lost city. This promise was given half heartedly with no intentions of following though. Till she received a few items that he father left for her. They were irrefutable proof that the city was real and obtainable. Through her own need to proof her father right and the guilt of not believing him herself she set out to uncover his secrete city.

Arik fell into the voyage with Geary quite latterly. After his deal with Hades he found himself drowning Geary jumping in to save him. Now he must help Geary on her quest to uncover Atlantis to gain her trust. But the gods have other plans they refuse to allow Atlantis be found and Apollymi inadvertently released causing an apocalypse.

Arik is a bit stiff and how naïve he is of the real world is hilarious. He has a cute little boy charm and he finds more than what he thought he would in the real world. Geary is very driven a bit of a prude you know she wants Arik but she will not let down those guards wail she is awake. But my favorite is Solin he is soo funny. He sarcastic and he bring out a fun teasing personality in Arik. He tries to pretend that he doesn't care about anyone but himself but you can tell underneath it all he has a heart of gold. I hope to see more of him in the future. This was not my favorite book in the series but I must say even the slower books that are not my top favs they are still some of the better books I've read. There is not one book in this series I did not like.

The Dream-Hunter (A Dream-Hunter Novel, Book 1) Overview

In the ethereal world of dreams, there are champions who fight to protect the dreamer and there are demons who prey on them...

Arik is such a predator. Condemned by the gods to live eternity without emotions, Arik can only feel when he's in the dreams of others. For thousands of years, he's drifted through the human unconscious, searching for sensation. Now he's finally found a dreamer whose vivid mind can fill his emptiness.

Her deathbed promise to him to salvage his reputation has now brought her to Greece where she intends to prove once and for all that the fabled island is right where her father said it was. But frustration and bad luck dog her every step. Especially the day they find a stranger floating in the sea. His is a face she's seen many times.... in her dreams.

What she doesn't know is that Arik holds more than the ancient secrets that can help her find the mythical isle of Atlantis. He has made a pact with the god Hades: In exchange for two weeks as a mortal man, he must return to Olympus with a human soul. Megeara's soul.

With a secret society out to ruin her expedition, and mysterious accidents that keep threatening her life, Megeara refuses to quit. She knows she's getting closer to Atlantis and as she does, she stumbles onto the truth of what Arik really is.

For Arik his quest is no longer simple. No human can know of a Dream-Hunter's existence. His dream of being mortal has quickly turned into his own nightmare and the only way to save himself will be to sacrifice the very thing he wanted to be human for. The only question is, will he?

Did not meet my expectations - Elena Monteros -
This book is not as good as I would expect from this author. I couldn't connect with the heroes and I felt no love between them. I really didn't like the time limit, and the way he went about winning her. She was so reluctant at first, but once she found out he only had two weeks as a human she suddenly decided she liked and wanted him. I had problems with the hero's initial bargain. OK, I know he wasn't supposed to feel, but to trade the heroine's life for two weeks as a human? I don't know... Then, the love just didn't develop. First it wasn't there, then it was there. What about falling in love?
All in all, I wasn't very impressed with this latest effort by SK. But I'm still looking forward to reading more of her work.

To Each His/Her Own - Alicia M. Ross - Warner Robins, Ga
I enjoy Sherrilyn Kenyon but sometimes her story line zigs when it should zag. The Dream Warrior series I like because when they are referred to in the Dark Hunter series, I was curious to know what there stories were. They are entertainment. No one has to write a dissertation on why they don't like them because that could be the very reason someone else DOES like them and won't recommend them out of fear of sounding stupid. The only complaint I have is the same as one other reader. There is so much going on in her latest books that I start getting really tired and have to put the book down. She needs to keep her characters memorable.

Awful "Mary Sue"....with ancient gods....gag. - L. Betts - Woods Cross, Utah USA
Very little history, lots of sex....vanity novel, the author is "Mary Sue" with the main male character. Boring and dull...don't waste your money.

The Villa Review

Nora Roberts scores another hit with "The Villa". Love, crime, mystery, suspense, murder - who else but Roberts can combine all of these with the perfect balance of each? She presented strong, three-dimensional characters with powerful personalities. Even though she juggled a plethora of characters and scenarios, she managed to make each one memorable in his or her own way. The storyline was solid and thrilling. My only minor complaint about this book was the lack of romantic development between Sophia and Tyler - I was hoping to see more of that relationship develop.

Roberts creates stunning scenery and educates the reader about wine making and the wine industry, which I found fascinating. She manages to inform without boring the reader and kept the storyline from straying too far from its main intention. I was very pleased and delighted with the entire book.

The Villa Overview

A proud family's deadly secrets are exposed in this passionate tale of two rivals who, while toiling in the Napa Valley vineyards, discover they have much to learn-from each other, and about themselves.

The Villa Specifications

Set in beautiful Napa Valley, California, Nora Roberts's latest novel portrays a rich world of family-owned wineries, complete with enough romance, sophisticated business intrigue, betrayal, and murder to cow the Medicis of Florence. The Villa focuses on the merger of two prominent winemaking families, the Giambellis and MacMillans, and the incendiary combination of the two upcoming leaders of those dynasties, Sophia Giambelli and Tyler MacMillan. Tyler is the manager of the MacMillan vines and the distilling process, a job that suits his frank and no-frills personality. Creative and flashy, Sophia is head of Giambelli's public relations, and her job has been to put the best spin on whatever her family business produces--hard to do when the merger requires that she and Tyler switch jobs, and particularly hard to do when her own heart seems to spin out of control whenever they're together.

Soon after the merger goes through, Tyler and Sophia learn that they have bigger problems than their conflicting work styles. Tony Avano, a Giambelli executive and Sophia's father, is murdered, and threats surface against the Giambelli women. As a quiet woman, Sophia's mother, Pilar, has made few enemies, except for Tony's new wife, Rene. The matriarch of the family--known simply as La Signora--may have knocked some rivals aside as she clawed her way to the top, but few would have reason to threaten her now. When poison is discovered in Giambelli wine, Sophia and Tyler learn the killer is much closer than they thought.

In description, dialogue, and plot, Roberts's talent and control are as fine as ever. But while the relationship between Pilar and David, the new COO, feels complex and mature, Sophia and Tyler's romance can at times feel slightly forced. As Roberts explains repeatedly, Sophia approaches sex "as a man does," which apparently means with no strings attached. And while that does tend to take the "romance" out of the romance to some extent, the positive aspects to be found in The Villa outweigh this flaw, ensuring another hit for the talented and prolific Roberts. --Nancy R.E. O'Brien

Not a bad read, but not a great book - kh -
Nora Roberts seems to be losing her edge, or at least getting tired. To qualify my following comments, I'm a big fan of hers, and I am a great admirer of her prolific production. However, the last three or four books of Roberts that I've read have fallen flat. The Villa was no exception.

Set in wine country, California and centering around the Giambellis, head of the newly merged Giambell-MacMillan wineries, The Villa is an epic tale of a sprawling empire, with all manner of nefarious business dealings and personal intrigue. Which was pleasant enough to read about, though at time the details about wine-making seemed thrown in for the reader's elucidation, rather than a provision of character background or setting. Do I really care why they head cut wood bearing grape vines? No, I don't, thanks.

My biggest grief was at the beginning, the second biggest at the end. I felt Roberts crammed too many extra players into this book, in such a fashion that I couldn't recall who was who. When Paulie is mentioned at a corporate meeting in some scene somewhere, I couldn't for the life of me recall who that was (one of Tyler MacMillian's employees). Yes, this is a sprawling empire, and yes, family is an important, if overstated, theme of the book. But draw us a damn family tree if you're going to populate it with so many extraneous people.

The ending left me confused and unhappy. Sophia goes from intelligent, motivated, determined, and "in fast-forward" to criminal in one misguided attempt at protecting family. And what is she doing in her bedroom when she's supposed to be at the burning winery? And what about Jeremy DeMorney's broken hand. He can't touch a woman's butt and hold a flashlight and open doors with one hand, and he certainly wouldn't be doing any of those with the broken one.

A better read than Black Hills or the Chesapeake Bay series, in my opinion, but not up to par with some of her other family-centric books (I like Blue Smoke, if you're going for the big Italian family thing, Montana Sky if you like farmers). Not quite worth a 4, but not yet dipping any lower on the scale.

One of Roberts' Best - Shamima Begum -
"The Villa" is one of my favorite Nora Roberts novel. The first time I've read it I got it from the library. It was time I bought my own copy. I got a good deal on it. If you are a Nora Roberts fan, this is one that you have to read.

Good Listen - Vanessa L. Nelson - Seattle, WA

Darkness Unleashed (Guardians of Eternity, Book 5) Review

Alexandra Ivy continues to mesmerize and hold us captive with her Guardians of Eternity series.

Every book is inter related and a lot of the previous characters reappear in the novels, which is one of the endearing and captivating things about this marvelous paranormal series.

We met Jagr, in the previous book. The Annaso, Styx, King of the Vampires sends for Jagr to find his mate's Darcy's sister - whom they have realized has escaped from 30 years of captivity from a manipulative and evil imp, Culligan.

The story starts as Regan, who has recently escaped Culligan's clutches, is in hot pursuit of revenge of the Imp and seeks his death from years of captivity and torture. Jagr has been sent on a mission. He is an unstable and recluse, lethal vampire and he cant believe he has been sent on this mission - looking for a pureblood Were and bring her back to Chicago as if he were her nursemaid. How humiliating!

Little does Jagr and Regan realize that they are both caught as pawns in the dangerous and lethal war between the curs and the Weres. Caine, rogue leader of his curs believe that they can come up from the bottom of the pack by mating with purebloods Weres. As you read on, you learn that there were 4 genetically altered Were sisters, unable to shift but of pureblood all the same.

The bond between Jagr and Regan is unmistakable from the start. Jagr is perplexed by his reaction to Regan as he has been a recluse for centuries - as he underwent terrible torture in captivity for 3 centuries and all he wants is to have peace in his heavily secured lair and to be left alone. Yet he realizes that a lone Vampire that isn't part of a clan can be prey to many demons and he begrudgingly accepts the mission to go and find Regan and bring her back to the Annaso's home where she won't be hunted by the curs.

The electric currents between Jagr and Regan are like bolts of lightning. Regan - after recently escaping captivity will not put up with any arrogant and self serving, macho, dagger wielding, Rico Suave Vampire telling her what to do with her new found freedom. Though she is very attracted to Jagr - she cant quite succumb to the attraction. When she finds out about his captivity, she is shocked to realize that not only she feels tremendous sexual attraction for Jagr, but they share a common bond that no-one but each other understand.

Ivy does it again. She manages to create a stage where every character, even the most vile of villains has its place and were everyone interacts with tremendous humor, charisma, tenderness and hot and heavy sexual scenes and tension.

The repartee is fabulously funny, from Regan as well as from our beloved gargoyle of all time, Levet. The interplay and developing relationship between Jagr and Regan is so endearing, at the same time as being sizzling hot. Some of the best sexual scenes interweaved amidst some great kick butt action!!! All in all, I really loved Jagr and Regan's story and I cant wait to read the next installment - about Salvatore Giuliani - King of the Weres and the third genetically altered twin Harley - who has been raised to believe that Salvatore killed her other three sisters.

Go get DARKNESS UNLEASHED and I am sure you are going to devour it in one sitting like I did! This is one of the best paranormal series I have read, ENJOY!!

Darkness Unleashed (Guardians of Eternity, Book 5) Overview

Jagr, what a vampire! I really liked this book, can't wait for the next one.

good book POOR EDITING - C. Price - DC, USA
I like her books ~ but one has to wonder who is editing these books these days, it was TERRIBLE ~ they kept mixing up the name of one of the characters ~ there were words in the wrong place. it got tedious after a while. Unfortunately I am noticing it more and more in the books I read

It managed to hit every paranormal cliche - monifa - brooklyn, new york United States
I have to admit, I am soooo over the vampire romance genre because of writers like this, they take what starts out as an interesting theme and manage to flog it to death, this one is about a vampire who was tortured for three hundred years, he escapes, swears fealty to a vampire chief and is subsequently commanded to hunt for, and find, the sibling of his overlords mate. He is the usual "emotionally scarred" soul, who is attracted to the aforementioned sibling who is a werewolf , and of course he finds out very shortly afterwards that they are soulmates(cliche). And of course the object of his affection who has also been kept in a cage for thirty years, despite her issues manages to (yawn) leap into bed with him a few chapters in ,have wonderful explosive sex, they surprise surprise find out get bonded, and presumably live happily and boringly ever after. Now of course there are the usual suspects - a villain , the sidekicks including a french gargoyle who is supposed to be cute but who ends up just irritating, the other heroes who you just know are going to have their own books because they are also recluses with issues and you can just tell all they need is the love of a good woman, and they'll be "ait". What I found most annoying was how the writer portrayed the heroine, she came across as an infantile fembot(female robot), who made token gestures at independence but pretty much subsided in to the background and let the "real men" take over and problem solve,as someone else pointed out,the hero kept referring to her as "little", and she used terms such as "you big jerk".All inall their interactions seemed to consist of her making bad decisions and, the hero coming to the rescue , accompanied by her pouting, and him patting her on the head so to speak. About the only decent characters in thee book were the villains who ended up getting killed, my favorite was Sadie who was at least allowed to plan and execute decisions. If you like Sherrilyn Kenyon's crappy stuff then you will enjoy this, but if you enjoy real kickass female characters then go for Kelley Armstrong,or the husband wife team that write as Ilona Andrews, or Patricia Briggs to mention just a few. They say that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, but this sort of imitation is a cheap knock off.

Read the Novel, Ditch the Audiobook - H. K. Berman - Pennsylvania
It's a shame there's no separate place to review audiobooks, because frankly I can't be certain if this book is good or merely mediocre.

Having recently adopted a long commute to work, I began listening to books on CD. I started with "World Without End" and was so enthralled I immediately delved into "Pillars of the Earth". Both were fantastic... dramatic, engrossing, and thoroughly engrossing. I decided to follow these with another Follett novel and was immensely disappointed.

The narrator is emotionless and tepid, and reads through the novel so quickly it's as though someone instructed him, "Hey, we have to fit this all on eight CDs!" The "actors" are even worse... six people voicing a few dozen parts. Whether you're listening to a French woman, an Afghan woman, or an American women, it's as clear as day that this is the same person with the same monotone and lifeless inflection just using a different accent. I couldn't help but think of a class of seventh-graders sitting in a circle reading their parts in succession.

For these reasons, I only made it halfway through before I had to stop listening. I found the story relatively uninteresting and unimaginative and the characters as dull and lifeless as the voices portraying them. I also have a problem with Follett's pacing, even in the wonderful "Pillars" and "World"... he write each scene as long as has more to add, then moves on. A woman giving birth may take up 30 pages of the story, while a pivotal battle scene is over in five. Another battle scene later on may take 25 pages. It's all quite randomly-paced.

I may have to pick up the book soon, as I always try to finish a novel unless it's totally dreadful, but I will not play another of those CDs. I'd rather listen to soft-rock FM radio (and that is to say... I'd rather stick needles in my eyes)!

Worthwhile read - V Ember - Utah, USA
Follett is reliable for turning out interesting, easy to read novels. This was the first I read, and it was definitely good enough for me to try others. By doing so, I came to realize that this is not his finest work; Pillars of the Earth and Worlds Without End were truly exceptional. While this book lacks the same gripping scope and plot, it was still very well done.

One of the worst Follett books is still really, really good - Bill Garrison - Oklahoma City, OK USA
Ken Follett is easily one of my favorite authors and I've been putting off reading LIE DOWN WITH LIONS since it is the last book of his I haven't read. Knowing Follett is coming out with an ambitious 3-book series starting in the fall, I decided to read this classic tale of espionage set in the Russian/Afganistan war in the early 1980s.

Ellis is an American spy and madly in love with Jane, but unable to tell her his profession. Circumstances lead Jane to traveling to Afganistan for a two year mission to provide medical care to the rebels. Jane doesn't know it, but the doctor she travels with, Jean Pierre is a Russian spy. The intrigue is typical Follett stuff. There's the twists and turns, the simplistic and humorous characterization, and a very steamy sex scene.

The novel is extremely relevant today, considering the current war in Afghanistan . The novel is worth reading just get a perspective on the times when America was on their side. Unfortunately, this book falls on the lower end of the scale for Follett novels. Too much time is spent on describing the scenery and landscape and the hardship of traveling in Afghanistan . There are several minor characters, but the novel revolves around Jane, Ellis and Jean Pierre, and it moves slowy at times.

Follett fans should definitely read this novel, but others who have read his recent novels and are interested in his earlier works should try THE MAN FROM ST. PETERSBURG, DANGEROUS FORTUNE, or HORNET FLIGHT.
