Frederica Review

Frederica is a story about a woman who is the eldest daughter in her family, and has taken charge in the wake of her parents' death. Her brother is off at university and this leaves her and her younger sister and brothers to fend for themselves more or less. Frederica takes the entire brood to London determined to give her sister a proper London Season, knowing that her sister's extreme beauty will be more than enough to garner her proper suitors and have her situated happily soon enough. While there she calls upon the only relative that she knows of in London. A distant cousin, a bachelor and a Marquis, is surprised by Frederica and her pluck and determination to do for herself with little or no help for anyone and takes them under his wing. Doing so starts a chain of events that finds him in way over his head.

I loved this novel, I could barely put the book down! The characters were colorful, the dialog witty, the repartee was very entertaining, and the story line pulled me in and didn't let me go until the last page was turned. The heroine was engaging, intelligent and had a great sense of humor. I loved how much she worked in the background for others and seemed to honestly believe that nothing should be done for herself. I also enjoyed her counterpart the Marquis, and loved watching both characters grow and change throughout the book, and in a very endearing and believable way. The secondary characters were wonderful too and also offered their own brand of humor and believability to the story, whether it was the youngest brothers, the passersby in the park or even the family dog.

It is so rare that I find a book that I enjoy so much, find so easy to get into and not only that, but also am looking forward to reading again very soon! This was my first Georgette Heyer novel and I am already looking forward to my next one. Modern romance novels have nothing on the tasteful romantic tension, well researched historical content, and the complete and believable characters written by Georgette Heyer.

Lacking something - E. Ries - Europe
Others have described the plot and the characters very well, so I would like to merely add why I don't feel able to give the book more than three stars.

Yes, there is a lot of light-hearted, funny banter. But it all stays on the surface and even though it is witty, for me it lacked profundity. It is entertaining, but won't affect your thinking, the way you see the world, it won't touch you deeply. Another thing I just could not make friends with was the fact that Lord Alverstoke is always bored by everyone except Frederica and even though he does some outwardly very kind things for other people, he does not do so with any love or true concern for them. For example, he sees caring for little Felix when he is ill as a terrible bore and ordeal and worries about the child only because Felix's well-being matters to Frederica. See also this quote "Charis's future was a matter
of indifference to him, except as it affected her sister, so he was content to let the matter drop." - and this is AFTER he is "reformed".

I was hoping that Lord Alverstoke would learn how much more meaningful and less boring life can become when one truly cares about the well-being of others - and not just one person that one sees as superior to all others.

Another thing that really bugged me was Felix's illness: it doesn't make any sense from a medical standpoint. One does not contract rheumatic fever from having been too cold the day before - it's always caused by a bacterial infection contracted 2-3 weeks before the symptoms show. And yet the doctor immediately worries that Felix will come down with it due to having been too cold and so it happens. But this is a minor point that may not bother most readers.

Maybe I'm being so critical because before this book, I read Alcott's Little Women and miss all the abundant heart, compassion and important themes found there. I also can't quite agree that Georgette Heyer's resembles Jane Austen's writing. Yes, the period is the same. But Jane Austen's books a full satirical observations of her own society, full of not only wit but depth as well. Austen also is not afraid of touching on some genuine sadness, on all parts of what it means to be human. Austen's books are peppered with wit and follow romantic plot conventions, yes - but there's also real meat in there, it's not ONLY fluff and a "fun romp". That said - if you feel like being entertained but are not looking for more, Heyer will deliver.

I hope this was helpful!

One of Heyer's top two Regencies - Kristin Belko - Jackson, Wyoming
Heyer's Regencies are all good but Frederica and The Grand Sophie are her best. (The next tier are Reluctant Widow, The Nonesuch, Cotillion, The Tollgate, Bath Tangle, and Unknown Ajax.) Heyer is the most interesting when her heroines are, like Frederica, "young matrons with two or three seasons of experience" and not young girls. Frederica (and her male counterpart) are witty, responsible adults and they provide a marvelous story. The charm of the Regency period with a very modern heroine, bearing family responsibilities with admirable dignity and fun, make this a very special book. *** Read Heyer's detective novels for an understanding of her own period, the 'thirties in upper-class England. While not as erudite as Sayers, Heyer's books are still good fun, well written, and have almost the same sense of a distant time today as Heyer's Regencies.

Not Quite The Grand Sophy - Teresa Thomas Bohannon - Tennessee, USA
I love almost everything written by Georgette Heyer...and the ones I don't love...I like tremendously. Frederica is similar to my favorite--The Grand Sophy, however it is just not quite there. It is a good read however, filled with witty dialogue, fun and scapegrace situations. Overall Frederica is just about perfect for sitting by candle or firelight on a dreary day, or reading in bed just before sleep.

1st SL book that i couldn't finish :( - Nathalie Corona -
I LOVE Stephanie Laurens i really do but for some reason i couldn't finish this book. I don't know if had something to do with the characters spending almost half of the time on a ship or the heroin writing in her dairy but i just couldn't finish it. I rather read the Cynster books and the Bastion Club again

Not A Quick Read - V. Fredrick - NYC suburbs
I can usually read a book in a day. Sometimes a good book will catch hold and I will forgo sleep to see how it ends. THIS IS NOT ONE OF THOSE BOOKS. the Black Cobra Series is not what I expected. It is a great premise and it was nice to find a heroine that was not too stupid to see a potential husband. But it is so bogged down in the travel details and the some interesting shipboard fight sequences that it loses touch with reality. A well born young lady openly sharing a room with a male companion for extended journey seems hard to swallow. I did like seeing old friends from past books. Sometimes the first book in a series is harder because of the time it takes setting up the scenario so I can only hope that the forthcoming books are better paced.

3 1/2 stars - Not Telling -
I rather liked the story of the conquest for love between Gareth and Emily. But the rest of it was just boring. Too wordy and detailed. Other than that, I think it was really okay.

This Matter Of Marriage Review

I work at a book store and happened upon Debbie Macomber's books by accident. I've read just about everything she has written and really love her books. I love that they're clean and not there isn't any "smut" in them. They are about real people that you wish you could meet.
This Matter of Marriage is one of my favorite books. I came across it because I wanted to read some of Debbie's older books. It made me laugh so much and I wanted to read it again. I want to recommend it to as many customers as I can. I'm 30 and single so I can relate to the story. It was just a sweet story of finding real love and not just lust. The characters build a real relationship.I would really recommend this book to anyone who loves Debbie Macomber books and anyone looking for a new author. She is one of the best authors out there in the romance genre. I always look forward to reading more of her books.

Check Out Once Around The Track

Once Around The Track Review

I'm not a NASCAR fan. I have never seen a race. Since I had enjoyed reading other books by this author, I clicked the button to buy the book.

McCrumb does a very good job in writing this book that even as someone who knew nothing about the sport, I got caught up in the characters & plot and started to care. She created characters that felt real to me, she took me into a world I had never even considered visiting. I thought it was wonderful and couldn't put it down.

And yes, I admit it, I googled NASCAR and looked into the real world of racing just a bit.

Once Around The Track Overview

"McCrumb draws you close, makes you care." -Los Angeles Times Racing fans have never seen anything like it-and they've seen plenty-the first all-women's team in stock-car racing history. Already a national sensation, the spotlight heats up when financial challenges force Team 86 to hire a male "wheel man." And Badger Jenkins is a man all right-a sweet-faced Georgian who oozes aw-shucks charm off the track and unleashes blistering speed in competition. But the real Badger is a hard man to know. Just ask the women whose job it is to keep both car and driver in one piece. From crew chief and team manager Tuggle to engine specialist Rosalind Manning, publicist Melanie Sark and diehard fan Taran Stiles, this asphalt sisterhood will power through a racing season of dizzying highs and terrifying lows to prove that women can do a man's job. And when the unthinkable happens, each will realize that they've been hurtling at breakneck speed toward a moment that will change them forever.

Rave Reviews For Sharyn McCrumb

"McCrumb writes with a quiet fire-like every true storyteller, she has the Sight." -The New York Times Book Review

"There is no one quite like her among present-day writers. No one better, either." -The San Diego Union-Tribune

"McCrumb portrays people so well it makes your heart ache." -Atlanta Journal-Constitution

do not waste your money. - Kathy Gilliam - Newberry, Fl, US
i found this book in the romance section which is not a romance. okay i guess it was okay but that story never really went anywhere. the biggest part of the book was getting to know the people and then the story was cut short. it left me wishing for more.

Better than St. Dale but ... - The Casual Reader - Georgia, USA
If you're looking for a NASCAR on the track racing story, this is not it. It is more behind the scenes information than action. However, for those of you who are new or casual race fans, it may meet your expectations for a racing-based story.

Character development was good until the end. As I read the book and the pages became fewer and fewer I became more and more nervous. Sure enough, the book ends with a brief fade to black instead of a meaningful event or revelation. The main character throughout the book leaves you hanging at the end. Three or four life changing events are listed in one, maybe two, paragraphs. After reading something about the character on almost every page throughout the book, a little more effort in ending would have been nice.

Except for the note card feeling I got when some of the "facts" were worked into the story, I like the author's writing style and will read future books she writes if the story sounds interesting.

Not Her Best - Sue C. -
First let me say, I love Sharyn McCrumb. Even though I don't like racing, I liked her last NASCAR book, St. Dale. This book however was a disappointment for me. I couldn't really identify with the characters and couldn't get interested in the storyline. If you've never read McCrumb before, don't start with this book. Sharyn McCrumb is an excellent writer and her other books are far superior to this one. Don't let this one book keep you from reading her other works. I'm looking forward to her next book hoping it returns to the style of McCrumb I so love.

The People Of The Mist (with linked TOC) Review

What a great story! Haggard wrote adventure fiction like no one else. His pace is slow but it feels right. He isn't in any hurry. He sometimes spends a paragraph or two with stunning descriptions, painting a picture in the mind. But the unfolding plot is totally gripping, and I don't mind the time it takes to make it through.

Haggard's characters are lovable. It is what makes his stories so effective. If you don't genuinely care about the characters, then you won't care about all the dangers they encounter. Watching Leonard, Juanna, and Otter face death over and over is gripping because you like them.

Haggard's settings are fantastic! He really knew how to create a vivid fantasy world. His descriptions are carefully integrated into the plot too. At one point in the novel, Leonard (a "guest" of the People of the Mist) is led by natives through a dark tunnel to a wide-open space in pitch blackness. Leonard can hear the sound of water rushing as if far below. He can hear the murmuring of crowds of natives as though from afar. Leonard waits the coming dawn when the natives will perform a ritual. How Haggard slowly doles out information as the dawn slowly breaks is amazing. While it is still dark, Leonard probes around with his foot. He discovers that about 2 feet in front of him is a drop-off. Then as the light begins to dawn, he can see that he is suspended far above the ground with snow capped mountains all around. Then as the light increases, he realizes he is standing on the outstretched palm of a huge monstrous idol he had seen from far off. The palm isn't nearly large enough for comfort, and a hundred feet below him is a river and a crowd of natives. He looks up to discover that his love, Juanna, whom the natives think is a goddess, has been placed a hundred feet above him, on the head of the idol. Once this weird stage is set, the action is ready to begin, and its action you'll never forget.

Haggard was also a thoughtful man. He often has poignant insights into the human condition: desire for love, the nobility of sacrificing yourself for a friend, loyalty, and the impossibility of complete happiness in this life, to name a few.

I have read 5 or 6 Haggard novels now, and People of the Mist may be the best yet. If you like adventure, fantasy, romance, with a touch of philosophy and humor thrown in, you'll love Haggard. My question is, why don't people write like this anymore? And another question, Why hasn't anyone done a film of this story? It would beat out "Indiana Jones" any day of the week.

One of my favorite books of all time - W. Bare - Duluth, GA USA
This is a brilliantly conceived book. It is amazing that it is still such a fun read after 120 years. The most remarkable thing about the book is that there are several very interesting plot twists that are wonderfully constructed, and completely outside the realm of what I would have guessed would happen.

Enjoy!!

Let Me In Review

Okay, so this book is definitely NOT for the faint of heart. I enjoy dark, gritty stories and am not easily offended by normally taboo subject matter so that is perhaps why I was not put off by this story as a few others were.

--Warning, the following contains some spoilers--
If you're looking for a light read, a sweet romance, kick-a$$ vampires you can idolize then find another book. There are no completely good nor completely bad characters in this book. Yes some are waaay worse than others but somehow the author manages to rouse a hint of sympathy for the most despicable characters--of course I'm speaking of Hakan here. Normally in books, movies, etc., these types of characters are the one-dimensional "evils" but the author gives a depth to these people that reminds us that no one is completely good nor completely bad. I found it rather disturbed me that I could feel any sort of sympathy for a pedophile like Hakan, even though my sympathy was very slight. I think most people want to demonize such individuals and to think of them as anything but pure evil is extremely difficult. I know it was for me, not that I'm saying "poor Hakan" now or anything (although the man was clearly sick) but the way the author portrays these characters really makes a person think and re-evaluate their emotions on these issues.

To me, this story felt more as if it were showing the "evils" of real life--the suffering individuals go through each day battling with different problems--as being much more frightening than a potential vampire swooping down on you in the night. Normally I do not care for stories about children but Oskar and Eli were extremely captivating characters.

Oskar was such a realistic character and should serve as an eye-opener to people regarding the potential emotional damage caused by bullying (layered on top of broken home issues). Perhaps Oskar would never have harmed anyone in his life, but I couldn't help but think the poor boy's psyche could have easily fractured further leading him to one day bring a rifle to school and opening fire. I liked the fact that he gained some confidence but did NOT turn completely confident nor into a super bad-a$$ who kicked everyone's butt and sent the bullies running. That's fantasy--not reality. What terrible things he may do in the future (for Eli's survival) is uncertain but the reader can speculate. We know that he will help Eli out of love but that doesn't make the idea of murder less severe does it? I also can't help but wonder about their future. If Oskar does not become vampire (since he says he doesn't want to be, but just wants to be with Eli) will the relationship become romantic as he gets older and starts having sexual urges? Will it be a sort of Hakan-Eli type relationship only this time sweeter and mutual? Even though there's a certain love there, I really don't think this is a happily ever after type of ending for those two. And I don't think it's meant to be.

What led me to give this book 4 stars rather than 5 was a few reasons. For one, as others have mentioned there are a lot of side characters and sub-plots that seem unnecessary to me. I did enjoy Virgina and Lacke's relationship quite a bit though.

Another thing that bothered me--unless I somehow missed the explanation--was how the heck Eli actually became a vampire. Was this told or did I accidentally skip a page? I assume it had something to do with that creepy guy who cut off Eli's "boy parts" (which wasn't explained why that happened either). Was Eli the subject of some sort of ritual that turned him that way, a primitive genetic experiment (it's mentioned about a virus in the blood), or were the two creepy guys vampires and turned him for kicks? I'm assuming the last one since the guy who cut off Eli's parts drank the blood. But it's not explained. Also, why do cats hate the vampires so much and attack them? If anyone knows Stephen King's "Sleepwalkers" I found that aspect of the story similar but it was never explained why cats had the irresistible urge to attack vampires. All of those things just left me scratching my head a bit.

Also, the scene with vampire/undead Hakan in Tommy's basement seemed a little unnecessary in my opinion. Speaking of which, what was he exactly? Virgina turned vampire but Hakan was acting like a zombie. Anyway, I can almost rationalize it as being Hakan's overwhelming obsession to finally "be with" Eli that drove him in that state. But zombie Hakan walking around with a hard-on attempting to find Eli and almost raping him in Tommy's basement? It's not something that makes me want to throw the book down, the scene is disturbing of course, but the attempted rape by a zombie-type creature seemed almost gratuitous in my opinion. The scene could have played out just as easily if Hakan simply showed up just trying to find Eli since he "loved" him.

Anyway, those issues aside, I still really enjoyed this book. It's one of the better books I've read in a long time and the actual plot is one of the most original as well. I haven't seen the film yet but I intend to soon. As I mentioned, this is not a light-hearted read and is definitely for adults only. I would absolutely recommend it to anyone who enjoys darker stories. "Let the Right One In" is definitely a book that will make you think and feel in a way most other stories--vampire or otherwise--do not.

--EDIT--
I've just watched the film and I must say the book is MUCH better. I can understand why people who saw the film first might have been put off by the book. The movie version is sweeter and almost cute in how it portrays Oskar and Eli's relationship and it doesn't even touch on so many of the issues presented in the book. Hakan's character wasn't explored at all (his part was actually very small) and if I had not read the book, I would not have even known he was a pedophile and just wondered who was that random guy taking care of Eli. I probably would have liked the movie better had I not read the book but I would have definitely had tons of questions because the film doesn't explain anything and no depth is given to the characters except for Oskar and Eli. The random shot in the movie that shows where Eli's genitals had been cut off would have definitely been a WTF moment for me had I not read the book, the movie explained nothing about Eli's past. I suppose the movie was meant to leave the viewer questioning a lot of these things though. Bottom line: If you're not afraid of darker subject matter, definitely read the book rather than watch the film. It's a much more engaging story.

Judging the book on the movies is an error - tigercaron - Minneapolis, MN United States
I don't want to add too much except to say that the book is too creepy. I expected a fun read, I got disturbing and unsettled. Think a couple turns tighter than Salem's Lot by King and you'll get the idea. The development of the characters is more defined than the movie. I spent much of my time with this read stunned at what the Swedish movie missed.

The title lost a star as the writing style could be distracting: As the focus moved from one character to another in the story, I tended to lose track of where (or who) I was at critical moments.

I wanted to share an experience: During one of the final chapters, one character burst into flames. I read that and I could smell smoke. It turned out that someone had lit a small fire outside on the step of my apartment building burning the molding.I caught it before it became much of a threat but it was a wild coincidence.

If You Think The Movie Was Good, Wait Until You See This - Sorokahdeen - New York, NY
Full of hope and horror, John Ajvidi Linquist's Let the Right One In is an undervalued novel. There is so much in it that is so real, so good and so different from all the things around it that it is hard to do it justice.

More than just another sample of "fang-fiction," Let The Right One In explores the most familiar ideas of vampirism and sets the result in a run-down housing settlement populated by the lonely, unseen people in Sweden's socialist success story, by single mothers, juvenile delinquents, pensioners, policemen and alcoholics. It is a community of facelessness whose residents often share nothing but the walls and hallways that separate their living spaces and creates a perfect hunting ground for a creature composed of secret, evil need.

What differentiates Lindquist from the thundering herd of writers currently cranking out vampire fictions in print, movies and television is Lindquist's fearless walk down the paths where his ideas and characters lead him. His characters make sense. His setting makes sense. The inability of the community to react makes sense. His explanation of vampirism and its compulsion is believable without wincing as is the vampire's choice of companion (and the horrific consequences of that choice) and so is the touching, twisted relationship that is the core of the story.

With Lindquist's deep skill, Let The Right One In enfolds the reader in a story of jaw-dropping darkness and sexual ambiguity shot through with flashes of childhood innocence that stands in absolute contrast to the polite homoeroticism of Rice or the worn, reflexive feminism of Harris and Meyer. Lindquist writes like a writer and never deviates from the directions in which his characters and ideas lead him: over and over he makes it disturbingly clear that he did not sit down to write characters whose lives any sane reader would like to slip into and Eli, the vampire-child of the story is, very simply, a monster-a sentient unnaturally animated, corpse that had once been a child-driven for centuries by an aching loneliness and a savage will to survive.

In a world where it seems no manuscript with the word "vampire" in it can escape publication, Let The Right One In is a breath of fresh air. It is a dark, disturbing, book filled with images and scenes that stick with you and change your understanding. It is a real novel, one written without compromise and without pity-a vampire novel written for people who've read something other than vampire novels and there is nothing phony in it.

Nothing in Let The Right One In gives the reader the impression that it is there because Lindquist thought, "Oh, they'll love this!" Twenty pages of Let The Right One In are all it takes to give the reader an impression that is like driving down a road and coming to a signpost that says, "The Meyer Stops Here."

I can't recommend it enough.

Disturbingly Good Horror - Mesmerix - Toledo, OH USA
(No Spoilers) When I picked up Let the Right One In, I did so because a friend told me the movie was excellent. Well, I haven't seen the movie yet, but the book was captivating. It held my attention, kept me turning pages, and gave me the occasional nightmare. Lindqvist is a truly disturbing horror writer who is capable of using your own thoughts rather than outright gore or violence. Not to say the book is without its share of bloodshed, but the true frights come from his blend of the innocent with the horrific.

The characters are brilliantly written and enchanting. Lindqvist warps your sense of pity until you don't know who is really good/bad anymore. The dialogue is masterful.

This book is not for the faint of heart. Incredibly disturbing and provacative. Don't read before bedtime.

Great Price for

An Echo in the Bone: A Novel Review

After so many books in the series, I don't really feel like I'm reading, but that I'm following the lives of someone I actually know. I admit that I didn't enjoy the stories of Brianna and Roger, Lord John Grey and William, as much as I enjoy reading about Jamie and Claire. There are so many people and places to follow now that the writing has to jump around and get choppy.

There seem to be too many coincidences in this book....too many people who "just happen" to run into each other when they need each other.

What I hated the most about this book was the constant reminding that Jamie is getting old and that he is going to die soon.

An Echo in the Bone: A Novel Overview

Diana Gabaldon’s brilliant storytelling has captivated millions of readers in her bestselling and award-winning Outlander saga. Now, in An Echo in the Bone, the enormously anticipated seventh volume, Gabaldon continues the extraordinary story of the eighteenth-century Scotsman Jamie Fraser and his twentieth-century time-traveling wife, Claire Randall.

Jamie Fraser, former Jacobite and reluctant rebel, is already certain of three things about the American rebellion: The Americans will win, fighting on the side of victory is no guarantee of survival, and he’d rather die than have to face his illegitimate son–a young lieutenant in the British army–across the barrel of a gun.

Claire Randall knows that the Americans will win, too, but not what the ultimate price may be. That price won’t include Jamie’s life or his happiness, though–not if she has anything to say about it.

Meanwhile, in the relative safety of the twentieth century, Jamie and Claire’s daughter, Brianna, and her husband, Roger MacKenzie, have resettled in a historic Scottish home where, across a chasm of two centuries, the unfolding drama of Brianna’s parents’ story comes to life through Claire’s letters. The fragile pages reveal Claire’s love for battle-scarred Jamie Fraser and their flight from North Carolina to the high seas, where they encounter privateers and ocean battles–as Brianna and Roger search for clues not only to Claire’s fate but to their own. Because the future of the MacKenzie family in the Highlands is mysteriously, irrevocably, and intimately entwined with life and death in war-torn colonial America.

With stunning cameos of historical characters from Benedict Arnold to Benjamin Franklin, An Echo in the Bone is a soaring masterpiece of imagination, insight, character, and adventure–a novel that echoes in the mind long after the last page is turned.

Quickly shipped....perfectly described - Jaime -
All around great.....book was described exactly in it's condition....seller shipped expeditiously and I received it exactly on schedule.....would definitely purchase from this seller again!

Gabaldon - KdR -
I have really enjoyed the whole series, but I was frustrated with the end of this volume. Too many things were introduced too close to the end and left us hanging!
In my opinion, it is ok to leave something unresolved to draw the reader toward the next book, but this time Gabaldon did not achieve the satisfying end of all the previous volumes.
Once again, it is a great series and I am an ardent admirer!

An Echo in the Bone - disappointed - Gabriella Martin - Western New York
Like the rest of the reviewers, I waited anxiously for this book to arrive. Then I waited a little longer, as it was a gift. I have to say i was disappointed, and the ending left much to be desired. Which is even tougher to deal with as there will be a three year wait until the next book.

I won't give anything away and there are plenty of plot summaries available in the reviews. When I first started this series, I loved to read about Jamie and Claire. They were larger than life for me, and often still are. Unfortunately, in many of the later books, there is less and less story about their relationship. As more family appears, they take up more and more of the story, which is hard for me. I understand the author wanted to explore the world and people around Jamie and Claire, but that isn't why I fell in love with the stories.

The ending for me was also hard to deal with. There wasn't really an ending for most of the characters, it was more of a cliffhanger. That really left me unsatisfied. With such a long wait between books, it is hard to stay interested in how the varies loose ties will be brought together. Say nothing of remembering the plot lines and the smaller characters that always make reappearances.

I have nothing against D. Gabaldon's writing and some of the lines her characters say can take your breath away, especially Jamie. I hope to read more of those magical lines in the next volume of this series.

Dead to the World (Southern Vampire Mysteries, Book 4) Review

This is a great series of books! I enjoy reading then, but wish they would have had the TV series follow the books. There are main characters in the TV series that are not portrayed in the books like the TV series at all! Overall good reading though!

Dead to the World (Southern Vampire Mysteries, Book 4) Overview

When cocktail waitress Sookie Stackhouse sees a naked man on the side of the road, she doesn't just drive on by. Turns out the poor thing hasn't a clue who he is, but Sookie does. It's Eric the vampire--but now he's a kinder, gentler Eric. And a scared Eric, because whoever took his memory now wants his life.

Dead to the World (Southern Vampire Mysteries, Book 4) Specifications

From Emma Bull's War for the Oaks to Laurell K. Hamilton's Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter series, from The X-Files to Buffy the Vampire Slayer, creators are mixing old European myths and legends with modern American pop culture. Incorporating influences ranging from blaxploitation movies and erotic novels to tabloid staples like UFOs and Elvis, authors and directors are creating a new mythology for the strip-mall, tract-house, cell-phone America of the new millennium.

One of the best-known and best writers of the new American mythology is Charlaine Harris. Dead to the World is the fourth novel in her Anthony Award-winning Southern Vampire series. It continues the story of psychic waitress Sookie Stackhouse, who has fallen out with her undead lover, Bill. Bill has no sooner departed for Peru, than Sookie finds the head vampire, Eric, running naked and terrified through the rural night. She helps Eric, and discovers his memory has been destroyed by a coven of unscrupulous, astonishingly powerful witches, newly arrived in her small Louisiana town, and offering a huge reward for Eric. Sookie tries to hide Eric, but her brother sees him--and immediately disappears. And Sookie finds herself caught in a war among witches, vampires, and werewolves. --Cynthia Ward

Eric and Sookie...WOW! Everything else fell flat! - January Dockery - Georgia
This is book #4 in the Sookie Stackhouse (True Blood) series. In this book Sookie finds herself single again and Bill is in Peru. Sookie finds Eric on the side of the road naked and his memory seems to be erased by a witches spell. Sookie's brother Jason soon after goes missing and Sookie has to find him and the witch to get the spell broken for Eric. In the meantime Sookie develops feelings for Eric and he also has feelings for her.

This book had great parts to it and then very boring parts as well! I loved every scene with Eric and Sookie in it. I love these two together! I enjoyed Bill being away (I am not a big fan of his), but other than that the book was a little disappointing. The witches weren't as interesting to me as they should have been and all the searching for Jason was boring! I skimmed a lot in this book and I don't normally do that.

I have to say the last 2 chapters were awesome and the ending was very interesting! I did enjoy this book and I will be reading the next book, I just thought this book lacked things that the last two seemed to have! I found myself wanting more scenes with her and Eric and less scenes of her hunting through the woods for her brother!

Finally!!!! - DarjeelingTea - SoCal, USA
I finally caved and ordered this to read via the iphone kindle app. So glad that I did. Finished it in 1/2 day...as I type this I just ordered book 2 to eat up.

loved it.

not as good as the 1st 3 in the series - Rebecca L. Chatfield - Columbus, OH United States
The Sookie Stackhouse books have been pretty well-written, and lots of fun so far. The things I have enjoyed the most in the series are the developing romance between Sookie and Bill, and the absolutely terrific descriptions of their encounters in bed. Forget all that in the 4th installment. The author has fallen back on those old standbys -- plot and action, and forgot to deliver the romance, and the action between the sheets.

The fast paced story is still competently written, but the effect is just to trivialize the mysterious and alluring Sookie, bringing her down to the level of every other plucky and resourceful heroine. And she has gone from fresh excitement at her discovery of sexual love, to almost-bed-hopping with every interesting superhuman who shows up. I can get plot and action and meaningless sex anywhere. Well-written, exciting love scenes are much harder to find. I have the next 5 books in the series on my shelf, ready to read. And I will read them, no matter what. But I sincerely hope that Ms. Harris has returned to the heart-wrenching, tingling love scenes between Bill and Sookie. Othewise I'm back to my search for well-written love and romance.

Guilty pleasure - Sara A. Pauff -
** spoiler alert ** Eric loses his memory, prompting some very Twilight-esque moments and badly-written love scenes between him and Sookie. Lots of scoffing and eye-rolling on my part, but I can't say I wasn't entertained.

Check Out Mistress Christmas: Wild West Boys

Mistress Christmas: Wild West Boys Review

Holly North has agreed to something completely out of character. As an accountant she would never strut about looking like an `X-rated Mrs. Claus, but with a little pleading and begging from her friend that's exactly what she's going to do. Due to the illness that has been sweeping through Sugar Plums, a Christmas-themed strip club, Holly dons the Mistress Christmas getup - adds a velvet mask and struts her stuff for the crowd.

Detective Nick West is on a mission. Granted it's entirely off the clock since his friend didn't want to file a report about the supposed robbery that occurred at Sugar Plums. He's dead set on taking down the thieving Mistress Christmas - until he gets a good look at her. Now he's far more interested in uncovering all her secrets on a personal level than pursuing her in any legal manner.

For Holly the freedom allotted along with anonymity is a real eye opener. Especially once she meets Nick who promises that he's definitely more sinner than saint. He's the epitome of all her sexual fantasies rolled into one tight, hot package that she would love to find under her Christmas tree tied neatly with a bow. Reality is that as an accountant he would probably never give her a second look but she's incognito and as Mistress Christmas she's allowed to be more bold and daring than she'd normally dare. Their first meeting is full of sexual innuendoes and Christmassy humor but it's the lap dance he insists on that really turns up the heat. Nick is a little confused since as a seasoned stripper Holly should know the rules about touching or kissing during the session. Instinctively he knows that Holly is innocent of wrongdoing but as a seasoned detective it's hard to let go of his concerns.

When Holly confides her naughty Christmas wish well, Nick's certainly not going to disappoint her - especially when her wish is one night of sexual decadence ... with him! Neither of them knows the truth about the other. He believes her to be a stripper who may or may not be robbing the men she dances for and all she knows about him is he's a Wyoming cowboy who does lots and lots of paperwork in his current occupation. Their deceptions may prove to be problematic in the future but for this one night, they're going to do far more than get tangled up in the tinsel.

Lorelei James is certain to bring a smile to your face with this holiday inspired tale. MISTRESS CHRISTMAS is full of smart and sassy characters, sexually charged situations, a little suspense, and plenty of chuckles. Holly and Nick complement each other beautifully and I got a huge kick out of being privy to their relationship as it developed. The whole time I was reading I wondered how Nick's `investigation' would turn out and I have to tell you it was nothing like I expected. Ms. James certainly throws readers a curveball on that one. This is a wonderful story and well worth adding to your keeper shelves.

MISTRESS CHRISTMAS is the first story in a brand new series entitled the WILD WEST BOYS. While I can't find anything about future releases in this series I'll definitely be on the lookout for them. Will also be going back and reading the ROUGH RIDERS books since I discovered this series is loosely connected to them.

Mistress Christmas: Wild West Boys Overview

-all signs point North for not-so-Saint-Nick

A part of the Wild West Boys series.

In a rare moment of recklessness, mild-mannered accountant Holly North lets her best friend guilt her into filling in as Mistress Christmas at Sugar Plums, a Christmas-themed strip club. Fearing she-ll be recognized-or worse, considered a fraud-she dons a velvet mask along with the Mrs. Claus-meets-dominatrix costume. She-s shocked at how deliciously wicked anonymity feels.

Detective Nick West is determined to discover how his friend was supposedly robbed after a lap dance at Sugar Plums. His visions of revenge vanish faster than a flying sleigh upon his first peek at Mistress Christmas-a leggy brunette with smoky eyes and a lush mouth begging for hours beneath the mistletoe.

Their attraction flares hotter than a fireplace on a cold winter evening, and Nick is only too happy to oblige when Holly blurts out her one Christmas wish-

For a naughty secret Santa to sweep her away for a night of anonymous sexual pleasure.

Warning: This erotic comedy contains naughty holiday innuendo, creative use of garland, sexy love scenes hot as spiced cider, a heroine as sweet as sugared plums, and a wildly romantic hero with a great big-candy cane.

Great Fun Read - Bladestorm - Australia
This was a fun exciting read! I enjoyed it, the characters were great, funny and truly cared for each other. You wanted their relationship to succeed. The sex scenes were HOT but the storyline made it better!

I liked this book as a fun summer read.

Mistress Christmas - M. Nix -
Shy accountant Holly North can't believe she let her client talk her into filling in as the hostess Mistress Christmas at Sugar Plums, a Christmas-themed strip club. But, she has for some reason decided to go along with it, probably since she can't seem to say no to a friend in need, as long as she wears a mask. She is surprised at how wicked it all makes her feel, and how she can let her lusty inner devil out.

Detective Nick West is at the club, on his own time, trying to get Mistress Christmas to try and rob him, as his close friend claims happened to him. He can't believe that the leggy brunette with the smoky eyes is the one responsible for the deeds his friend claims. But she definitely gets his blood running at a fever pitch.

Their attraction is mutual and when Holly blurts out her Christmas wish on the second night they meet he is only too happy to grant it. The thing is one night might not be enough for either, can Holly reveal her real self to Nick? Will they both take a chance on love?

But, with one misunderstanding it all might be lost.

Mistress Christmas is a fantastic addition to the Wild West Boys. This one from the West side of the family and in a big city no less. I loved how Nick is thrown into falling for a woman he thinks there is no way he can have. Another lesson in "don't choose a book by its cover". Ms. James continues to keep me hooked on her books by writing fun and spunky characters. I look forward to more of her stories both on and off the ranch. Mistress Christmas is a super fun holiday themed read that can be read at any time of the year.

Salvation in Death Review

I was apprehensive about this book, because Roberts' past novels where the Catholic Church has played a part have been riddled with mistakes regarding what the Catholic Church believes/teaches, and how Catholics should (theoretically) act and behave. However, to my surprise, Roberts did fairly well with this one. I was actually quite impressed with Dallas' analogy of her duty to protect and serve people and Lopez' duty to protect and serve souls.

However, in the epilogue Dallas asks Lopez about the Church's teachings about those who commit suicide. Lopez' answer implies that the Church teaches that all those who commit suicide automatically go to hell. This isn't the case. The current Catechism of the Catholic Church states: "Grave psychological disturbances, anguish, or grave fear of hardship, suffering, or torture can diminish the responsibility of the one committing suicide." (CCC 2282)

Otherwise, though, a solid book. I do hope we get to see Charles and Louise's wedding (and Louise's bachelorette party) in subsequent books.

Salvation in Death Overview

Ancient church rituals meet cutting- edge crime solving in the latest novel in the #1 New York Times–bestselling series that’s “Law & Order: SVU—in the future” (Entertainment Weekly).

In the year 2060, sophisticated investigative tools can help catch a killer. But there are some questions even the most advanced technologies cannot answer.

Ridley Pearson has praised J. D. Robb’s suspense as “taut” and “nerve-jangling.” Her latest thriller sets a new standard for suspense, as the priest at a Catholic funeral mass brings the chalice to his lips—and falls over dead.

When Detective Lieutenant Eve Dallas confirms that the consecrated wine contained potassium cyanide, she’s determined to solve the murder of Father Miguel Flores, despite her discomfort with her surroundings. It’s not the bodegas and pawnshops of East Harlem that bother her, though the neighborhood is a long way from the stone mansion she shares with her billionaire husband, Roarke. It’s all that holiness flying around at St. Christobal’s that makes her uneasy.

A search of the victim’s sparsely furnished room reveals little— except for a carefully hidden religious medal with a mysterious inscription, and a couple of underlined Bible passages. The autopsy reveals more: faint scars of knife wounds, a removed tattoo—and evidence of plastic surgery, suggesting that “Father Flores” may not have been the man his parishioners had thought. Now, as Eve pieces together clues that hint at gang connections and a deeply personal act of revenge, she believes she’s making progress on the case. Until a second murder—in front of an even larger crowd of worshippers—knocks the whole investigation sideways. And Eve is left to figure out who committed these unholy acts—and why.

This series is awesome. If you haven't read any of the books you need to start at the beginning. Each book is a stand alone work but refers to events from other stories. Very highly recommended.

Salvation In Death by JD Robb - P. M. Stonicher - New Orleans, LA USA
Eve Dallas is the same enjoyable character and she is joined by her husband, Peabody, and McNab. They end up with two homicides that envolved religion - murder of a priest and minister. Some of the witnesses or suspects had her questioning again the death of her father and her nightmares. Missed some of the more colorful characters in it like Mavis and Leonardo. Not much love hate banter with the butler either which some look forward to. But still all in all a good one!

Needs a good editor - C. Kim -
I got this as a Kindle freebie, which tends to instantly lower my expectations, but maybe I should have gone even lower. This book is just dull. It reads more like a teenage girl's diary than a novel. It tries to be hip and funny and edgy and insider-y and cool, but it's just plain dull. Obviously the writer has no idea what the New York publishing world is like. The narrator is whiny and weak and also somehow a mega-celebrity magazine editor? She started her own magazine but is cowed by some witchy bosses whose only goal in life is to conspire against her to ruin her life? The plot goes from childish to just plain dumb as things unravel. And the only the names have been changed paralleling of the Jane magazine/Jane Pratt story is so obvious its ridiculous. If Jane Pratt really did have anything to do with this (as some reviewers have speculated) I've lost all respect for her.

And don't get me started on mundane writing, unimaginative dialogue and grammar errors. A good editor would have gone a long way toward punching this up to the level of decent chick lit.

Ho-hum - Laurie Gold - Dallas, TX USA
The Devil Wears Prada didn't do much for me. The idea of writing about the experience of working for one of fashion's most notorious bosses was terrific. Lauren Weisberger's writing style and ability...not so much. I had higher hopes for Karen Yampolsky's Falling Out of Fashion, a 2007 roman à clef about her ex-boss, Jane Pratt, because I faithfully read the snarky and irreverent Jane magazine on a regular basis. I liked Yampolsky's book more than I did Weisbergers, but not by much. Had it not been a free download for Kindle last month, I'd have felt ripped off because the book reads less like a work of fiction than it does a book-length "as told to" biography of Jane Pratt, where only the names have been changed to protect the guilty.

The details of her protagonist's life are presented in a matter of fact fashion, the good, the bad, and the selfish, and the honesty is never begrudging, but that positive quality is also its main flaw. If you're a true Jane Pratt watcher, you probably know the answers to the "who is she writing about?" guessing game presented in the book, and if you're more casually interested, try Wikipedia. But there's really no need to read the book itself as it's impossible to separate the fictional Jill White from the real Jane Pratt. For a work of fiction, that's an unsurmountable problem.

Falling out of fashion - janice -
i enjoyed this book. It shows a strong woman in Jill, and how working with women can be a back stabbing experience.

I don't understand what everyone is talking about. This book is one of my favorite of the series. I love Cratus. He's the defintion of a hero. He was punished for saving the life a baby, yet he didn't doubt his choice. Its definitly a step up from Striker's story. I hated that one. I liked Delphine, especailly when I found out she was Leta's babe. All in all.... this book rocked!

Great Book! - Broken Angel - Los Angeles
This was a great book I am so good I bought it I loved it. I would definitely recommend it to any one who like the the Dark Hunter Series or anyone who like Paranormal Romance, as with all Sherrilyn Kenyon books speacially the Dark Hunter series.

Kenyon's books going downhill - Voracious Reader - Cincinnati, Ohio
I was in LOVE with the Dark Hunter series and raved to anyone who would listen - "Twilight who?" but then she began to slowly write so formulaic and just when you thought you could map the universe out she switched it on you and not in an enjoyable way. I used to own every book in the Dark Hunter series and after the introduction of Sin and the Gailu I decided "Forget this!" it doesn't make sense anymore. She is writing for money not her public. Then along came Stryker's story and PLEASE! i wanted to say STOP now you are embarrassing yourself. I have still checked in with the book storyline through the library and reading at Borders but Kenyon does not seem to be learning anything from her faithful public. Now she has started Nick's "Series" and it seems she is going to re-work things and milk it for all its worth. I loved Nick and was really hoping for a redeemable book in his story but i have a bad feeling it is just going to be one more thinly veiled marketing ploy for our money. It is too bad when your favorite writers go over to the "making money" side of the business and forget those of us who got them their place in popular fiction by cranking out books instead of inventing a better story.

sadly i haven't read this book and I thought sherrilyn kenyon couldn't write a bad book but two or three of them have just left me feeling sick inside like i wish i could just forget that i had ever read them.

Rode Hard, Put Up Wet (Rough Riders) Review

Giddy-up Cowgirls, Welcome to another deliciously hot read from Lorelei James's addictive Roughriders. This is book 2 in the series although for some reason I missed it the first time through. So now even though I'm up to book 9, I had a super fun time going back to the beginning and revisiting the delicious McKay boys before they all grew up, got married and started acting responsible and repopulating most of Wyoming. With Rode Hard Put Up Wet we of course get all-kinds-of-ways hot and steamy cowboy lovin but here we also get the added bonus of a two-four. As in 2 couples finding love and passion in 1 sexy story and how great is that!

We met our first couple; Gemma and Big Cash Crow in Long Hard Rideand although they're older in the traditional sense (30's & 40's) both still very much have the "it" factor when it comes to spice in the bedroom. I loved their story and definitely preferred it out of the two. Cash even gave me a couple of *sigh* moments when he finally turned the lights on and opened his eyes... Their romance is about second chances, no matter what stage of life you're in.

Explosive, impulsive, selfish, jealous, unsure, intense and at times downright annoying; Cash's daughter Macie and self-centered artist Carter McKay as our second couple personified young love. This pair was all over the place with their emotions and a ton of fun to watch as I never knew what they were going to do next. I had a seriously tough time liking Carter though --as Macie often says "He's a dumb@ss" Finding him immature and for the most part just an idiot. Cash on the other hand is all MAN...

Widow Gemma Jansen is looking for someone to help manage her ranch, luckily she knows just the sweet cowboy for the job. Cash Big Crow has just retired from the rodeo circuit and is looking to reconnect with his grown daughter Macie. Going to work for Gemma might be just the answer everyone's looking for. Giving Cash and Macie the opportunity to settle in one place and get to know each other and Gemma the hired hand she needs. Of course before Cash agrees he has a few non-negotiable conditions; theres won't be a strictly working relationship, Gemma might be the boss lady during the day but once in the bedroom Cash is going to be in charge, no questions asked.

To complete our foursome we're also introduced to ranch hand and I'm too sexy for my boots/tortured artist Carter McKay. He takes one look at Macie and realizes he's found his perfect muse. The artist in him begging to paint her, sculpt her and just plain have her. This doesn't sit well with Cash, he knows all to well the reputations of those hard living, womanizing McKay boys and there ain't no way one of them is getting near his daughter. Oh theres sure to be fun and games and even a few dust ups at the Bar-9 this summer.

As much as I enjoyed this it certainly wasn't my favourite in the series and it took me a while to figure out why I was having a harder time connecting with this story. But with 2 couples and 4 POV's it just wasn't as tight. And with all the switching back and forth neither couple ever felt complete. Anyways, a very small gripe for another great instalment

James rides again - L. Nesbitt - Chapel Hill, NC
The first book I read in the Rough Riders series I picked up rather randomly at another online bookstore so I could get free shipping. I knew I liked western romances. What I didn't know was that these are a little romance and a lot erotic (porn, really). I was kind of shocked but actually also pleased.

This one challenged me a bit more than the first because I had trouble imagining these characters could be so "normal" and yet -- given the right person and a little privacy -- so sexually out there. What I like is that they retain their morals and standards throughout, and do the right thing despite their off-the-charts libidos.

All in all, a good read if you like erotica and DEFINITELY preferable to those romances where all they do is kiss. Speaking of unrealistic! I hope James continues to write this type of book and would be even happier with a little more depth of character and plot.

Two for One deal in this Western Romance - M. Kelly - Canada
Book 2.
After the first book, Long Hard Ride, it was a no brainer to just continue right over to this book. What a lovely treat because you get 2 awesome hot romances in this book.
I love that the characters carry over from book to book and in this story you get to read more about Big Cash Crow and Gemma. They were introduced in the first book and I love that warranted their own awesome story.
Gemma & Big Cash Crow are a bit of an older couple in the traditional sense. However that is the draw for me. I love that the author made an amazing romance for a couple in their late thirties and forties. It was just as hot as anything that I have read.

The next couple is another McKay brother, Carter and his story is how he falls in love with Macie (Big Cash Crow's daughter). I loved the family dynamics in this story. You have a daughter/father healing relationship as well as the rough and tumble of a western erotic romance. Both couples have two coming together stories and it was just an awesome read. I know they say you dont have to read the books in order but it is just better if you do. You will just appreciate the character growth if you do.

Lorelei James, you are my hero! - V. Filas - Richmond, VA
Words cannot describe how much I love this book and this series. I read through the entire set in three days. Hot, hot stuff! Lorelei James is an amazing writer. She is never cheesy or predictable with her characters or love stories. I never thought I'd be into cowboys, but whoooowheee those boys are hot. I should have asked Santa for one.

Crush on You (Three Kisses) Review

The Baci sisters learned on their father's deathbed that their winery - Tanti Baci - is near financial ruin. Alessandra, the youngest, is determined to save the vineyard - her idea - fix up a cottage and have weddings there at the vineyard. Of course, nothing is easy. The contractor who's suppose to fix up the cottage ups and leaves for a better paying job. Enter Penn Bennett.

Penn Bennett is visiting his newly found half-brothers. Turns out their father was having an affair with Penn's mother. Penn's not all that sure he wants to get close to his brothers, but needs time away from LA - Penn is also a Home Improvement personality and has just gotten burned by a woman. He's curious about Alessandra.

Alessandra has her own story - she's called the Nun of Napa after her wedding day ended tragically and she hasn't had a relationship since then. She's attracted to Penn, but she doesn't want a relationship.

Along with Alessandra and Penn's story, there is a secondary romance with Alessandra's best friend Clare and Alessandra's cousin Gil that was wonderful. They've been best friends since kindergarten and now Gil has discovered that he's in love with Clare. Problem with that? She's engaged and getting ready to marry someone else.

So why not 5 stars? To be honest, while I mostly liked Alessandra, I found some of her actions rather unlikeable. And the ending between her and Penn seemed a bit abrupt. But I loved the secondary romance and wouldn't have minded reading more about those two!

If you like Christie Ridgway books, you'll like this book. It's like many of her other books - well written, some good humor and just enjoyable to read - I was ready to move to Napa. If you've never read one of her books, this is a great book to start with.

Crush on You (Three Kisses) Overview

She made knitting sexy.

Now she's taking on a dilapidated winery, three sisters, and the bad boys next door.

The Baci sisters are on a mission to save the winery that's been in their family for generations-by transforming it into the perfect wedding destination. If only Alessandra Baci-affectionately known as the "Nun of Napa"-didn't need the help of tempting neighbor and business rival Penn Bennett.

Opps, It's a Romance Novel - Wilhelmina Gaudy - Beaverton, OR USA
Had I realized "Crush on You (Three Kisses)" was a romance novel I wouldn't have ordered it. What I was expecting was a fun, flirty, read. But, what I found was very slow reading well into the book and annoyance once it picked up.

I was really disappointed by it. I was hoping for so much more. Like looking forward to a trip to Paris and when you arrive you have a stomach flu and it's raining cats and dogs outside.

Maybe this book is more to your liking than mine. It seems plenty of others really enjoyed it.

Love this new series - Tracy Vest - Northern California
Alessandra is nicknamed the nun of Napa Valley, and her tragic past has resulted in men cowering to her every whim, not being able to tell her no. Until she meets Hollywood fix-it bad boy Penn Bennett. He agrees to fix up the crumbling wedding cottage which Alessandra hopes to be the family's ticket out of the red. The nun and the bad boy have an undeniable attraction that surprises them both, but is Penn, who is still smarting from his own parentage ready to be Alessandra's secret?

Ridgway's first in a new series about sisters in Napa Valley was a treat to read. I was disappointed with her "Knitting" series, which made this one seem better than it probably was. While I liked the pairing of Alessandra and Penn, like many other readers, the secondary love story between best friends Gil and Claire is what stole the show. I would have liked for that story to be more expanded.

Fun Read. - Country Woman - Kansas
I just finished reading this book. It was a bit slow to start, but after the first couple of chapters, I couldn't put it down. This is my first read of anything by this author, and I am pleased to add her to my favorite list along with Susan Wiggs, Sherryl Woods and Robin Carr. I'm looking forward to the next book in this trilogy.

McKettricks of Texas: Tate Review

Tate is the head of the McKettricks empire, ex-husband to Cheryl, dad to twin girls and the only man to still make Libby Remington heart skip a beat.

Tate is autocratic and despite the fact he is an up and up guy, always willing and ready to do the right thing his word is generally law in them parts of the world.

Despite the fact that this was Tate's and Libby Remington story, Ms Miller suck me into this book by fleshing out secondary storylines and tossing in what amounts to normal day to day living situations.

Tate and Libby had been together since forever and it took something major to tear them apart - that something came in the the guise of Cheryl, the mother of Tate's twin girls. This book picks up years later when the girls are six and Cheryl and Tate are over and done with and life moves on for everyone - that is for everyone except Libby. Libby has never left the small town they live in, other than a business that's barely breaks even, she was in the same place she was all them years ago now and still in love with Tate.

When one thing leads to another including the death of a close friend, Tate lays his cards on the table to Libby and despite a few minutes of indecision Libby take Tate up on his offer to rekindle their romance and see where they can go with it this time.

The bulk of this book is made up situations and events outside of Libby's ad Tate's attempts at romance. Siblings dynamics is explored and I thought that was some of the best scenes of the book. Both Tate and Libby's relationship with their respective siblings was a pleasure to watch, they had a laugh, they knew how to laugh at each other, the knew each other so well that the expected wind up and pissed off moments really had me smiling - it showed how close these people were to each other despite their sometimes gruff mannerism.

The authors filtering the book with enough kids and animals was a nice touch for me. I am a lover of these two things in a book and they had me laughing out loud at the most incredible things that they say and do.

Real issues were dealt with in this book, mother daughter relationships, the cycle of things that can happen to a family when sickness intervenes. Then there are scenes of people trying to close the rift between family and then there were scenes of small town doing what they do best - pulling together when the chips are down, but not forgetting to carry on small town tradition of gossiping as much as they can ..

As much as all these things appeal to me, they were also the things that niggled me as well, all those things were just skimmed at, nothing was delved into, so I got just enough to make it intriguing, but not both side of the coin in some cases and not enough to really make an impact on the big picture.

There is one story line which follows Tate and his ex-wife's relationship with their girls that I would have loved to see go further. While it predictably went where I expected it to go - I would have loved to get more about Libby's and the girls take on the situation, and even the ex-wife as well as I thought it was a bold move on Ms. Millers part to take that route with their relationship.

As an audio book, the narrator made this book come alive for me, with the little lit in his voice at the appropriate time and even down to the sarcasm that rolls off Tate more often than not he got that right and it came across really well for me.

Bottom line

If this is standard material for Ms. Miller, I am no doubt going to be backtracking and checking out more of this Mckettricks clan series. I like her down to earth style, her characters are solid - I got to know them really well - their love, their likes and even some of the stance that they took that I didn't agree with but I respected them for it.

I was surprised at the everyday feel of the plot, these people are oil rich, but Ms. Miller showed me the people beneath the cars and planes and the corporation. They were hard workers, they were community minded and they rooted for their own with a passion that is commendable.

This is my first book by Ms Miller, but I did not feel as if I missed out on anything, the book can be read on it's own. She gives little glimpses of the past to make me the reader understand more about these people that she is introducing to us now and I liked it.

I am not sure I can wait for the next book to be transferred to audio, because as much as there are no cliff hangers in TATE - she has me excited about so many unfinished business that I am just going to go ahead and read the next book in the series which is GARRETT..

Disappointing - RomanceReader1959 - RIVERSIDE, CA United States
This is one of LLM books that I did'nt like. To start off I was a little upset that Tate made the girls donate their gift. That's like a slap in the face to the gift giver. She did not go into why Tate felt that they should give the castle away. And what was his problem with having money? I do agree with other readers about the relationship between Tate and Libby. I would have loved to hear how he explained cheating on her. And why wait over 5 years to go after the woman you love, when you're already divorced. I finished the book 2 days ago and have not been able to read Garrett story yet. And with my reading ocd, (I can't read a book in a series until I have all of them) it must be something wrong. Let's hope his story gets better.
