Lady Isabella's Scandalous Marriage (Berkley Sensation) Review

I loved this book. You want to see this couple work it out. Very likable characters. You also get a great glimpse of Ian and Beth, whom I adored in "The Madness of Lord Ian Mackenzie." You can't go wrong with this one. Can't wait for Cameron's story.

Unfortunately...a True Disappointment - A Lot of Reading -
If you're reading reviews for this book because you enjoyed The Madness of Lord Ian Mackenzie, take my advice and skip this entry in the series. It is, much to my disappointment, absolutely tedious. With the preceding book having been so thoroughly enjoyable, I had been hoping beyond hope (in the face of the reviews that I had read before purchasing it) that this would at least come close. No such luck. It's hard to believe that the quality of the two books could be so inconsistent but there it is. Bummer.

Disappointing entry in the Highland Pleasures series - Sacramento Book Review - Sacramento, CA
//Lady Isabella's Scandalous Marriage// is the second book in Jennifer Ashley's series about the wicked Mackenzies who scandalize Victorian Britain. While it shares the strengths of //The Madness of Lord Ian Mackenzie//, it fails to match the suspense, passion, and extraordinary characters of the other book.

Isabella and Mac's broken marriage is the topic of this book. They eloped on the night of her debut, but Mac's inability to communicate with Isabella, and his alcoholism have torn them apart. Over the years, Mac and Isabella have remained friendly, but she cannot forgive his treatment of her and he makes no amends. For some reason, however, when Isabella storms back into Mac's life to inform him that someone is forging his paintings, he decides to win her back.

Though their relationship is heartrending and emotional, their reunion lacks punch; mostly because Ashley dribbles their history in short flashbacks later on in the book and Mac's recovery from alcoholism seems too easy. There is also plenty of passion between Mac and Isabella, but she keeps him at arm's length for far too long.

The weakest part of the book is the forgery plot. It is woven into the narrative when there is a lull, and is wrapped up in a clichéd manner. Fortunately, the inclusion of the colorful Mackenzie family livens the book and makes reading //Lady Isabella's Scandalous Marriage// less of a chore.

I look forward to the next in the series - Karen - Cheyenne, WY
I agree with so many of the reviews. I loved the first book in this series and I look forward to the third book, but I just didn't care about these characters. I love Jennifer Ashley's writing, that is what keeps me coming back. The plot just didn't hold my attention. Now if the story had been about the night these two met and eloped and then went into the sufferings and tragedy that occurred and then to have them overcome those and declare their everlasting love, well that would have been more interesting to me. The parts of the story that describe the night they met were intriguing to say the least. An enjoyable read, just didn't make me want more. Now Cam's story sounds good, I just hope it has more of the angst, depth and characteristics of the first in this series.
